Venerable Chuan Deng

Venerable Chuan Deng is the Abbess of SPGA, In-charge of the Buddhist Chaplaincy Unit and an Honorary Chaplain.  She received education in Malaysia, Myanmar and the United States.  She holds a bachelor’s degree doubling major in Mass Communication and Buddhism, and an honorary master's degree in Comparative Religion.  She received her tonsure under Venerable Master Guang Yu (廣餘老和尚) in 2003 in Penang. Venerable Master Guang Yu passed away while Venerable Chuan Deng was pursuing her postgraduate study in the United States, and she started dwelling under Venerable Yin Yeung. In 2009, she came to Hong Kong with Venerable Yin Yeung to help the setup of SPGA and development of spiritual care services.

Venerable Chuan Deng is dedicated to help the patients in hospitals as well as their families with spiritual care services, and presses ahead with life and death education and spiritual wellness. She was the co-host of a radio program named “A Sutra for Every Family”  (家家有本常念的經) on Channel B of the Buddhistdoor with Venerable Yin Yeung before. From 2011 to 2014, she wrote a column titled “The Mindfulness of Zen" (禪門一念) in the e-zine “Apperception” (明覺) at Buddhistdoor and collected many of her inspirational articles in her publication "Light Up Own Self" (自己點火).  In 2018 and 2023, the books of “Steamed Bun and Fried Egg” (饅頭煎蛋)  and "How are you today" (你現在好嗎) were published respectively. She is a regular columnist for Buddhistdoor and Buddhist Compassion since 2016. During 2021, Venerable Chuan Deng had also shared her views of life with the public in the RTHK TV program “Dialogue with Masters”《大師對談》(total 39 episodes).
